About Mr Freshwater
Even when Wayne is not actually fishing or writing his passion is that strong that he is either reading up on fishing in books, magazines and websites or he is watching fishing DVD’s, movies and clips on websites particularly sites in the states and Japan where anglers are way ahead of Australian anglers and are constantly on the look for new and better products and techniques.
There isn’t much that Wayne has not already achieved on the freshwater sports fishing scene from consistently winning
tournaments to attaining Australian records and everything in between he has done it all. Wayne is now acknowledged by the majority of the Australian fishing fraternity as the most proven and accomplished freshwater sports fisher in the country.
Wayne’s knowledge of freshwater sports fishing is second to none and he is as comfortable with a 3 weight fly rod in his hand chasing tiny brook trout as he is with a bait caster in his hand targeting big Murray cod and he has proven that he has the uncanny ability to catch any species he targets in any location he has to or chooses to fish, a trait very few anglers have in the world let alone this magnificent country of ours.
Wayne is a Batlow based man who has been fishing the Tumut, Wagga, Batlow, Tumbarumba and Tooma districts for more then 20 years now and has been doing monthly fishing reports on this extensive area in the fishing magazine NSW Fishing Monthly for over a decade now.
Wayne also writes reviews, feature, location and technique articles for NSW Fishing Monthly magazine and also writes feature, location and technique articles for Australia’s Freshwater Fishing Magazine, QLD Fishing Monthly, VIC Fishing Monthly and North East Angler magazine.
Wayne also does feature articles and product reviews for websites and his top quality photographs have been used in several fishing and camping books. Wayne and his photographs have also appeared on the cover and in the centre folds of many of the above mentioned magazines.
Wayne is the holder of several Australian and NSW ANSA fishing records including the Australian ‘Length Only’ record for the biggest redfin “English perch”, the biggest golden perch, all three trout species including rainbow trout, brook trout and brown trout and he recently gained the Eel tailed Catfish record on one of his own Insanity Tackle lures.
Wayne has years of experience and success in the fishing tournament scene and has regularly mixed it with the biggest names in the sport.
Wayne only enters freshwater catch and release tournaments like the ABT Bass events and The Australian Yellowbelly Championships but he has also done well in the ProFish events and many Classics that revolve around catch and release over the years.
Wayne and his partner Sharon ‘Mrs Freshwater” who he chooses to fish the tournaments with have rewritten the record books on the tournaments scene as well with 7 wins from 10 starts with two seconds and a third placing in the three tournaments they didn’t manage to win, simply unbelievable. This amazing run included 2 Australian Yellowbelly Championship Titles (Golden perch tournament), 2 Timberlake Legends Titles (Murray cod tournament) and 3 Lake Hume Classic Titles (Golden perch, Redfin and Carp tournament). In fact in over 15 years of tournament angling between them they have only finished outside of the top three on two occassions every other time they were on the podium.
Wayne also ran his own guiding business for several years and was the first guide in the country to offer the option of catching big carp on fly or soft plastics. Clients also had the options of trout on fly or lures, Murray cod and golden perch on fly or lures and redfin on fly or lures.
Wayne is a sponsored angler who uses, promotes and helps with research and development of products with companies such as JM Gillies, Gladiator, Rapala, Ugly Fish, Outlaw spinnerbaits, Balista lures and Kaos cod flys.
Wayne is always experimenting and looking for new and innovative lures and techniques like catching carp on plastics which he is well known for and has now almost made an art form out of.
Wayne was the first person in Australia to write articles on the art of catching European carp on plastic’s, this easily mastered skill has helped him to position himself better in some fishing tournaments over the years.
This passion and thirst for new products and techniques led Wayne to start his own lure business called Insanity Tackle. This business is totally dedicated to finding and designing new lures to help fool those increasingly pressured fish.
